You might think it makes the most sense to head straight to the coast of NC or due south, instead of basically northwest. And maybe you're right, but there's a big chunk of the South Carolina coast that I hear is pretty treacherous for cyclists (Rt 17 near Myrtle Beach, for those who know it) so this is my way of both avoiding those dangerous roads and hitting up a couple extra cities, namely Charlotte and Columbia. At this point, I'm in no rush to get the Florida, so I'm happy to take the scenic route. That does mean a few extra days of climbing, but so be it.
As far as "why Cameron?" well there's a little cidery called James Creek Cidery that I'm interested in checking out. Chatting with Blake, who runs the campsite I'll staying at (Antique Town Campground), he says it's a great spot and people come from all over to try it. I don't think there's much else to do around here, so it'll be some cider and some nature. Good combo!
